Bear-Resistant Products
When shopping for bear-resistant products, like coolers, trash cans, or food storage containers, it’s important to make sure they are certified as “bear-resistant.” This certification isn’t just a label; it means the product has undergone rigorous testing to prove it can withstand the power and persistence of a bear trying to break in. These products are crucial in preventing bears from becoming food-conditioned and in helping to keep both people and wildlife safe.
For the most accurate and up-to-date information on available bear-resistant products, visit the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC) and the Wildlife Management Institute (WMI) websites. These organizations humanely test products using captive bears and maintain listings of products that bears cannot get in to. These lists provide valuable guidance on selecting the right bear-resistant gear for your specific needs. New products are regularly tested and certified, so more choices become available all the time. Occasionally, products may be removed from the list. Be sure to use the most up-to-date lists to ensure a product you are going to purchase is currently certified as bear-resistant.
The IGBC tests products with grizzly bears. The WMI tests products with black bears. If black bears are the only species in an area and there is no possibility of grizzly bears expanding into the area, use the WMI list. Otherwise, use the IGBC list.
